Parent-Child Interaction Therapy at Newport Counseling Center

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an intensive treatment program that is designed to help both parents and children. This service can be provided either in the office in person or by telehealth or a combination of both. The PCIT program works with parents and children together to improve the quality of the parent-child relationship and to teach parents the skills necessary to manage their child’s behavior problems.

PCIT is Appropriate for Children Who:

Are between the  ages of 2 and 7 years and exhibit any of the following behavioral concerns:

 - Difficulty in school, preschool, and/or daycare

- Aggression toward parents, siblings, and/or other children

- Sassing back to their parents

- Refusing to follow directions

- Temper Tantrums

- Swearing

- Defiance

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an intervention for young children with challenging behavior that teaches caregivers specific behavior management techniques and play therapy skills as they interact with their child. PCIT focuses on increasing children's positive behaviors consisting of weekly to bi-weekly sessions. To learn more about PCIT visit: www.pcit.org.

HOW IT WORKS:

PCIT is an effective treatment backed by over 30 years of research. Live coaching is the primary method of caregiver training. The therapist observes the caregiver and child from behind a two-way mirror, providing coaching of the skills to the caregiver through an earpiece. Through this process, caregivers and therapists work together to manage challenging child behaviors.

ADVANTAGES OF LIVE PARENT COACHING:

+ Skills are acquired more rapidly because the caregivers learn by doing

+ The therapist provides immediate feedback to caregivers while observing challenging behaviors

+ The therapist provides caring support as caregivers gain confidence and mastery of skills
